Caring for your Robert Welch kitchen knives

All Robert Welch kitchen knives are dishwasher safe, however, for best results we do recommend washing them by hand. Please follow the product care instructions below to ensure your knives remain in prime condition.

Protecting your knife

DO

• Use your kitchen knife on only wooden or synthetic boards.
• Store your knife correctly - preferably in a knife block or specially designed drawer unit.
• Sharpen your knife often with our recommended hand-held knife sharpener

DO NOT

• Cut onto metal, stone, glass or any hard surfaces.
• Use Robert Welch knives for chopping bones.
• Store loose in a drawer with other knives, cutlery and utensils.
• Allow the blade edge to come into contact with other metal or hard or sharp objects when loading the dishwasher.

Washing your kitchen knives by hand (recommended)

Rinse your kitchen knives to remove all traces of food as soon as possible after use. Wash in warm soapy water with a microfibre cloth or non abrasive brush*. Try to avoid soaking your kitchen knives and always dry thoroughly immediately after washing, using a microfibre cloth.

*Always avoid scouring with pads or abrasive cleaners as this will scratch the surface.

Washing your kitchen knives in a dishwasher

All Robert Welch knives are dishwasher safe, however, for best results we do recommend washing them by hand.

When washing your kitchen knives in a dishwasher:

• Place on the top rack of the dishwasher.
• Wash on a short hot cycle 65°-75°C (150°-167°F).
• Use quality branded all in one dishwasher tablets*.
• Keep Rinse Aid topped up and Salt (for hard water areas).
• Avoid washing with non-stainless steel metals (this can cause rust staining).
• Ensure the dishwasher filters are cleaned and use a proprietary dishwasher cleaner regularly.

*For UK customers we recommend Fairy Platinum Plus and for US customers Cascade Platinum Plus.

Additional care of DuPont™ knife handles

Periodically apply a mineral oil to handles to maintain their colour. Please remove any excess oil.

Common marks - their causes and remedies

Rust

Stainless steel does not rust, but it can receive rust marks from other metallic items in your sink or dishwasher, for example: cast-iron, silver, silver-plate, steel wool or non-stainless steel implements. Thankfully, this is only aesthetic and is easily removed with a proprietary stainless steel cleaning cream (we recommend Bar Keepers Friend). In any case you do not see an improvement please contact the Customer Care Team at help@robertwelch.com.

Using the hand-held sharpener

Water sharpening (best):

1. Remove the clear guide, fill the recess under the ceramic wheel with water and replace guide.
2. Hold sharpener firmly on a flat surface.
3. Align your blade within the guide, slide the blade back and forth through the ceramic wheel 10 - 20 times from heel to tip (applying light pressure) until desired sharpness has been achieved.
4. Rinse and dry your knife thoroughly.
5. Sharpen twice a month (or to suit) to maintain the desired edge sharpness.

Dry sharpening (quick) - follow steps 2-5, as above.

We recommend that after 12-24 months, depending on the frequency of use, you change the ceramic sharpening wheel in order to maintain your knife’s cutting edge to a high standard. Replacement wheels are available as a set of two.

Cleaning the hand-held sharpener

The sharpener should be cleaned periodically by hand, lifting the clear guard off to wipe inside using a damp micro-fibre cloth and then dried thoroughly before replacing the guard. The ceramic wheel can be removed and washed in the dishwasher to prevent a build-up of sharpener dust.
