Back in the 1530s, as Henry VIII was busy courting Anne Boleyn and severing ties with Rome, an altogether less contentious religious event was born – Mothering Sunday.
Observed on the fourth Sunday of Lent, it marked a time when people returned to their “mother church”– the place of their Christening – for a special service.
Servants were granted a rare day off to reunite with their families.
